MORE ON DOGS AND GARLIC

A customer from my etsy shop sent me this note. Some very interesting information about dogs and garlic. Please keep in mind this may not work for all dogs. Please consult your vet for more information......

Garlic literally saved my dog's life. We picked up Cha Cha from the street. Per witnesses, she was kicked out of a car and abandoned. Found out she was sick with parvo and roundworms. Even though we had great vets, she was slowly dying--starving to death because the roundworms didn't let her absorb any nutrients and greatly weakened by the parvo eating away at her.

I was desperate and found an article by a kennel which routinely deals with this type of problem. They advised giving fresh garlic to repel the worms, so that the parvo treatment could do its work. With nothing else to lose, we gave it a try...and got a miracle. She rebounded that next morning, and she's never looked back.

Three months later, Cha Cha is 58 lbs of loving, crazy fun! The vets can't explain it (they were surprised about the garlic), but they don't disbelieve it either. So, I think it's just like humans--some dogs can handle it and some can't.

STORING YOUR TREATS AND TIDBITS

Always store your dog's treats in an airtight container like a plastic bowl with a tight-fitting lid or a zip-top plastic bag (with the air squeezed out!). This will keep moisture out.

Treats and cookies containing meat should always be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator to prevent spoilage. To use them, take out as many treats as you wish to feed your dog and then return the container to the refrigerator. Most pet trets in the refrigerator have a shelf life of about 2-3 weeks; if you want to keep them longer, I suggest freezing them. Treats can be frozen for about 4-5 months. To use the frozen treats, take them from the freezer and thaw them in the refrigerator.

A quick survey of the internet shows many sites that talk about onions and garlic and being poisonous, even deadly to cats and dogs. On the same page, you will see ads for "Natural Garlic Supplements For Dogs" and sites that recommend garlics for flea prevention and general well-being. It is hard to know what to think.

Here is a pet health site from the American Animal Hospital Association that discusses poisons.

Toward the bottom of that page, there is a specific list of poisonous materials. It lists garlic and onions as poisonous, even deadly, but only in a raw or spoiled form. So does that mean that cooked garlic is OK? What about garlic supplements that people are selling for pets?

We'd like to know what you think! What have been your experiences with garlic? What has your vet told you? Has anyone lost a pet due to garlic poisoning?

Cheese bones

I've been talking about doing this for quite awhile now! I just never seem to find the time to sit down and do it. I got up this morning and decided today was the day....WELCOME TO MY BLOG!

THE SANDY DOG BAKERY was created by me to provide healthy and delicous dog treats for my dog and my friend's dogs. My little Lakeland Terrier, Sandy, is rather picky! OK.....she's REALLY picky! She will not eat the basic hard dog bones you buy at the grocery store. I started making the peanut butter bones and she was hooked. I moved on to the Pumpkin, Cheese and other flavors. When I gave them to friends and family to try on their dogs...they all loved them. I decided I should probably share these with the rest of the world!

My daughter, Rachel, suggested Etsy.com as a place to sell and the rest is history! We went "online" at the end of September 07 and have now sold over 100 bags. We love the many kind notes we get from our customers! I hope to start getting pictures from my customers to put up on this blog. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL!
